Low Well Water Pressure: Causes and Fixes, in Order
First, define the symptom precisely
Pressure complaints split into three distinct problems, and each points a different direction. Constant low pressure at every fixture points to settings or supply. Pressure that surges and drops in cycles points to the pressure tank. Pressure that fades through the evening or in dry months points to the well itself.
Note which one you have before touching anything. It is the single most useful fact you can give a pump installer, and it may save you a service call entirely. The sections below run the same order we use on site.
The pressure switch: cut-in, cut-out, and what they mean
A standard system runs between two setpoints. The pump starts at cut-in, commonly 40 PSI, and stops at cut-out, commonly 60. Everything you feel at the shower lives inside that band.
Switches drift and points burn. A switch cutting out at 45 instead of 60 gives you a permanently weak house with a perfectly good pump. Settings can be adjusted and switches are cheap to replace. This is why diagnosis starts at the switch, not at the bottom of the well.
The pressure tank: the usual suspect for cycling
The tank holds a cushion of air above a bladder of water. That air charge is what pushes water out between pump runs. When the charge leaks down or the bladder fails, the tank waterlogs. The symptom is rapid cycling: pressure surges as the pump kicks on, sags as it kicks off, over and over.
A waterlogged tank does more than annoy the shower. Every start wears the motor, and short-cycling is the leading killer of otherwise healthy pumps. Fix the tank promptly and the pump lives longer. The check takes minutes with a tire gauge on the tank’s air valve, pump off, system drained.
Supply-side causes: the pump and the water level
When switch and tank check out, look at supply. A worn pump loses head as impellers erode, and output sags everywhere. A dropping water level mimics the same complaint with a tell: performance recovers after the well rests, and the worst pressure arrives after heavy use or in late summer.
These two separate cleanly with measurement. Amp draw and flow testing profile the pump. A sounder measurement finds the water level. Guessing between them is how people buy pumps they did not need, which is why we measure first.
Plumbing culprits people forget
Sediment-clogged aerators make one faucet weak while the system is fine. Undersized or corroded galvanized lines choke whole branches of older farmhouses. Iron bacteria can foul a check valve until it half-closes. A pressure regulator installed decades ago can fail closed. Each has a cheap fix once named, and each has been mistaken for a dying well.
The tell is scope. One fixture weak: fixture problem. One branch weak: line problem. Everything weak: system problem. Thirty seconds of walking the house with that question sorts most complaints before any tool comes out.

Quick Answers
Can I just turn my pressure up?
Within limits, yes: the switch adjusts, and the tank pre-charge must match. The system and pump have to support the higher band, so have it set by someone who checks both.
Why is pressure fine in the morning and weak at night?
Classic drawdown signature. Overnight the well recovers; a day of demand pulls the level toward the pump. A level measurement confirms it.
My pressure gauge reads 50 but the shower is weak. How?
Pressure at the tank is not flow at the fixture. Suspect clogged lines, a fouled valve, or a failing regulator between the two.
How often should the tank charge be checked?
Annually, as part of a routine system check. It is a five-minute measurement that decides whether your pump short-cycles itself to death.
Does a bigger pressure tank raise my pressure?
No. The switch sets pressure; the tank sets how long pressure holds between pump runs. A bigger tank smooths delivery and rests the pump, which is worth having, but it is a different fix.
Would a constant-pressure system help?
A variable-speed drive holds one steady pressure instead of a 40-to-60 swing, and it shines on long showers and sprinklers. It costs more and adds electronics. We will tell you honestly whether your complaint justifies it.
Could low pressure mean my well is failing?
It can, which is why supply-side testing is in the sequence. But switch, tank, and plumbing causes outnumber well causes by a wide margin, so check the cheap suspects first.
