What a Water Well Really Costs in the Texas Panhandle

Why nobody honest quotes a flat price

Ask three neighbors what their wells cost and you will get three numbers that look unrelated. All three can be true. A well is priced by what is under your ground and what you put in the hole, and both change from property to property.

This guide breaks down the real cost drivers so you can read any driller’s bid, ours included, and know exactly what you are paying for. Driver one: depth

Drilling is priced substantially by the foot, so depth is the biggest single variable. In our part of the Panhandle, depth to reliable water swings widely: creek-bottom ground may hit productive sand shallow, while upland caprock wells drill considerably deeper for the same gallons.

The regional water table matters too. The Ogallala Aquifer that supplies most High Plains wells has declined over decades of pumping, which is why a new well next to a 1975 well often drills deeper than the original. The Texas Water Development Board publishes data on the aquifer and its levels; the trend is the reason honest siting beats optimism.

Driver two: casing and completion

The hole is only half the well. Casing diameter and material, gravel pack, and the sanitary surface seal make up the completion, and they are not the place to save money. Texas well construction standards require proper sealing for good reason: an unsealed well is a direct pipe from surface runoff to your drinking water.

Bigger casing costs more but accepts bigger pumps and makes future service easier. For stock wells, modest casing is often plenty. For a household or irrigation well, sizing up can be the difference between a well that serves and a well that limits you.

Driver three: the pump system

The same hole can be finished three ways. An electric submersible with a pressure tank is the standard household setup where grid power is close. A solar pumping system costs more up front but eliminates the power bill and the trench, which usually wins on remote pasture. A windmill costs the most to erect and the least to run, and can outlive its installer.

Storage belongs in this math too. Tanks that carry two or three days of demand let a smaller, cheaper pump do the work of a bigger one, and they keep water flowing through cloudy spells, calm spells, and repairs.

The costs people forget to compare

When you weigh a well against alternatives, count the whole picture. Extending grid power to a remote site can cost more than the well itself. Hauling water has a price in fuel, equipment, and hours that compounds every dry month. Rural water meters carry monthly bills forever, and gardens and cattle drink meters dry in July.

A drilled well is a capital asset on the land. It adds appraisal-relevant value, and for ag operations it may carry tax treatment worth asking your accountant about.

Rework, deepen, or drill new: the price logic

When a property already has a well, the cheapest path is usually to evaluate it before pricing a new one. Lowering a pump costs little. Cleaning out a silted well costs more. Deepening an existing hole, where construction allows it, sits in the middle. A new well costs the most and delivers the most: modern casing, a proper seal, and decades of life.

The evaluation itself is quick, and it converts the decision from guesswork to arithmetic. We regularly tell landowners not to drill, because the old well had years left in it. The reverse is also true: pouring repair money into a failing-casing well is buying the most expensive water in Texas.
