Solar Pump or Windmill: What Should Power Your Stock Water?

The question behind the question

What you are really buying is not a machine. It is water in the trough every single day with nobody standing there. Both solar pumps and windmills deliver that when sized and maintained right, and both fail at it when they are not. The choice comes down to your site, your demand, and how you like to own equipment.

Output: when each one pumps

Solar pumps produce on sun. Output peaks on long summer days, exactly when cattle drink hardest, and drops in cloudy stretches and winter. That alignment with the cattle calendar is solar’s quiet superpower.

Windmills produce on wind, which the Panhandle supplies generously in every season, with one exception: the hot, still weeks of high summer. Those calm spells land on peak demand, which is why every windmill system needs storage sized to bridge them.

Either way, the storage tank does the smoothing. Two to three days of demand in storage makes weather a non-event for both technologies.

Cost: buying versus owning

Installed cost usually favors solar for a given daily output. Panels and controllers have gotten cheap; towers and mills have not. If the budget conversation stops at the invoice, solar wins most sites.

Ownership cost over decades tilts back toward the windmill. A maintained mill runs 20 to 40 years on oil changes, leathers, and occasional rebuilds, all cheap. Solar pumps and controllers are service items on roughly the same schedule as any submersible system, and panels degrade slowly over decades.

Weather and toughness

Hail hits panels; wind and lightning test towers. Both risks are managed with proper equipment: impact-rated panels on engineered mounts, and mills with working furl systems that turn out of storm winds. We build for Panhandle weather as a baseline, not an upgrade.

On pure simplicity, the windmill takes it. There is nothing electronic on a mill to take a lightning surge. On low attention, solar takes it: no oil, no leathers, just an occasional glance and panel cleaning.

Storage: the part both systems share

Whichever machine you pick, the storage tank is where reliability actually lives. Wind pauses and sun sets. Water in a tank does neither. Sizing storage at two to three days of herd demand converts an intermittent power source into a constant water supply, and it buys you repair time when something eventually needs service.

Storage also changes the pump math in your favor. With a buffer in the tank, a modest pump filling slowly all day beats a big pump chasing the herd’s afternoon thirst. Smaller pump, smaller panels or mill, longer equipment life: the tank pays for itself in the design before it ever holds a gallon.

This is the part we see undersized most often on systems other people built. When we quote either technology, the storage line item gets sized from your head count in writing, and we will show you the math.

The honest scorecard

Choose solar when: the site is remote from power, summer demand is the load that matters, you want minimal routine attention, or budget favors lower install cost.

Choose a windmill when: you want maximum equipment life, the site has clean wind exposure, you already have a sound tower worth rebuilding, or you simply want stock water that owes nothing to electronics.

Choose both when the ranch is big enough: mills and solar spread across pastures diversify your weather risk the same way spreading grazing does.

And whichever you choose, put real storage behind it. The tank, not the machine, is what your cattle actually drink from on the worst weather day of the year.

Sometimes, and it makes a fine backup arrangement. It depends on the well and cylinder setup; we will tell you if yours qualifies.

How big a herd can a solar pump water?

Sized correctly, solar handles substantial herds. Demand math drives design: gallons per head per day, times your count, plus margin.

Do windmill parts still exist?

Yes. Aermotor still manufactures in Texas, and parts for common mills remain available. Rebuilds are routine work for us.

Which lasts longer in a hailstorm?

A furled windmill generally shrugs off hail; panels rely on impact ratings and can be replaced individually if a violent storm wins. Neither risk should decide the question alone.

What does maintenance look like for each?

A windmill wants an annual visit: oil, leathers as needed, and a look at the furl. Solar wants almost nothing routine beyond reasonably clean panels, with pump and controller as the eventual service items.
