How Long Does a Well Pump Last?
The honest range and why it is wide
A quality submersible pump in clean water with a healthy pressure system commonly runs 12 to 15 years, and we pull units older than that still working. The same pump in sandy water, short-cycling against a waterlogged tank, can die in five and take a hot July weekend with it.
The range is wide because lifespan is not really a property of the pump. It is a property of the system around it. That is the useful news: the system is yours to control, and the three killers below account for nearly every early grave we pull a pump out of.
Killer one: short-cycling
Motor starts are the hardest moments in a pump’s life. Inrush current heats the windings, and the thrust bearing takes its beating at start-up. A system with a failed pressure tank can start the pump thousands of extra times in a single season, and every one of those starts came off the far end of its life.
The fix costs a fraction of a pump: keep the tank’s air charge right, replace failed bladders promptly, and size the tank so the pump gets real rest between runs. If your pump clicks on every time someone washes their hands, the countdown has started.
Killer two: sand
Sand is an abrasive slurry moving through machined impellers at high speed. It erodes stages, opens clearances, and steadily eats capacity until the pump fails outright. Persistent sand also signals a well problem: a failing screen, a degraded gravel pack, or over-pumping that pulls fines.
Treat sand as a diagnosis, not a nuisance. Address the source and the next pump lives a full life instead of inheriting the same death.
Killer three: running dry or hot
Submersible motors cool by the water flowing past them. A pump above the water level, or one breaking suction as the level draws down, runs hot and cooks its windings. Around here, with regional water levels declining, this is a growing cause of early failure.
Symptoms arrive before death: air spitting at fixtures, thermal overload trips, output that recovers overnight. A level measurement and a deeper set catch it in time. Ignoring it buys a pump and a service call together.
How to actually reach year fifteen
Annual checks: tank charge, switch condition, amp draw against nameplate, and a level measurement written down. Fix cycling the week it appears. Investigate sand the first time you see it in a toilet tank. Set pumps with margin below the water level and revisit the margin every few years.

What brand of pump lasts longest?
System conditions outweigh brand. We install proven lines with Panhandle parts availability, sized to the well, because sizing and the pressure system decide lifespan more than the label.
Are windmill cylinder pumps different?
Completely. Cylinders wear leathers as routine maintenance and can serve for decades with rebuilds. Their lifespan model is service intervals, not replacement age.
My pump is 14 years old and works. Replace it?
Not on age alone. We test amp draw and output; a strong senior pump can stay, with your plan updated so an eventual failure is a scheduled job, not a crisis.
Does a bigger pump last longer?
An oversized pump short-cycles and dies young. Correct sizing against well yield and demand is the longevity play, not extra horsepower.
Does installation quality really matter that much?
It is the hidden variable. A torque arrestor that stops cable chafe, a proper splice kit, a check valve at the right interval, and a pump centered off the bottom all add years. Cheap installs fail at those details, not at the pump label.
Is it worth replacing a pump proactively?
Sometimes. If the pump is old, the well must be pulled for other work anyway, and failure timing would hurt, replacing while the rig is set up saves a second mobilization. We price that option whenever we pull an aging unit.
Do lightning and surges shorten pump life?
Yes. Submersible motors are a common lightning casualty in this country. Proper grounding and surge protection at the pressure switch are cheap compared to a motor, and we check both on service visits.
