How Deep Are Water Wells in the Texas Panhandle?
The honest answer: it depends on your section, not your county
Ask how deep wells run in the Panhandle and any careful driller answers with a question: where is the property? Depth to water changes across a single ranch here. Caprock uplands, creek bottoms, and river breaks each behave differently, and county averages hide all of it.
Three numbers matter for any well. Static water level is where water stands in the well at rest. Total depth is how far the well goes. The distance between them, the water column, is your working margin. A good well has column to spare below the pump, and a marginal one has none the first hot week you own it.
What controls depth here
Most of the region draws from the Ogallala Aquifer, the sand and gravel body under the High Plains. Its saturated thickness is greatest west and northwest of Amarillo and thins toward the caprock edge, which is exactly where our service area sits. That is why honest siting matters more on the eastern edge, not less.
Off the caprock, geology changes. Bottomland along Sweetwater Creek, the Washita headwaters, and the Canadian River valley can produce from shallower alluvial sands. The red-bed country toward the Oklahoma line draws from thinner, more variable formations. Two wells five miles apart can differ by a hundred feet and both be correct.
How to look up real wells near you
Texas keeps public records. Licensed drillers file a State Well Report for every completed well, and the Texas Water Development Board publishes water-level measurements from observation wells across the Panhandle.
Those records are the basis of an honest drilling bid. When we quote a well, we pull the reports for nearby registered wells and read depth, formation, and yield from what actually happened next door, not from a countywide average.
The reports repay reading. A neighbor’s log lists the formations passed through, where water was struck, the casing set, and the yield the driller measured. Three or four logs around your section sketch the underground before a bit ever turns, and they flag surprises like red-bed clay or a dry interval you would rather learn about on paper.
What depth means for your budget
Drilling prices substantially by the foot, so depth is the largest cost variable. It also sets pump requirements: deeper settings mean higher total dynamic head, larger motors, and more drop pipe. A 150-foot stock well and a 400-foot irrigation well are different projects from the first dollar.
Depth also carries a planning meaning. Water levels across most of the region trend down over the decades, so a new well should be drilled and the pump set with margin for decline. Wells bid to yesterday’s water level become tomorrow’s deepening jobs.

Is deeper water better water?
Not automatically. The right completion targets the best saturated interval, seals off problem zones, and leaves margin below the pump. Depth is a means, not a goal.
Can you tell my depth without drilling?
We can estimate a range from nearby State Well Reports and TWDB measurements. The drill confirms it, but the estimate is evidence-based.
Why did my neighbor hit water shallower than my well?
Formations undulate, and bottomland sits closer to water than upland. A quarter mile and forty feet of elevation change the answer honestly.
Do water levels really keep dropping?
The long-term TWDB record for most Panhandle counties trends down. Individual wells vary. That is why we set pumps with margin and record levels on service visits.
What is saturated thickness and why should I care?
The vertical footage of water-bearing sand below the water table. It is your well’s fuel gauge: more thickness means more margin for decline and drawdown. It is the number we estimate from nearby logs before quoting.
Does a windmill well need to be shallower than a submersible well?
A mill lifts by cylinder and rod, and practical lift has limits, so very deep settings favor submersibles. Plenty of Panhandle windmill wells run a couple hundred feet without complaint. The site decides.
Does drilling deeper protect me from future decline?
Only if water-bearing formation exists below. Extra casing through dry rock buys nothing. The protective move is margin within the saturated section plus a pump set conservatively deep.
