How Much Water Does Livestock Need?
The planning numbers
Working figures for hot-weather demand in this country: a dry cow or steer, 10 to 15 gallons per day. A cow-calf pair, 15 to 20. A bull, up to 20 or more. Horses, 10 to 15. Sheep and goats, 2 to 3. Wildlife drinkers add modest volume but steady draw. Extension services publish fuller tables, and the ranges below track them for Panhandle conditions.
Heat moves these numbers hard. A 100-degree week with hot wind pushes demand toward the top of every range, exactly when your water system has the least slack. Lactating cows on dry summer grass drink at the top of the chart; the same cows on lush spring wheat drink noticeably less, because the feed itself carries water. Design for July, and October takes care of itself.
From head count to system design
Multiply the herd by the hot-weather figure and you have peak daily demand. A hundred pairs at 20 gallons is 2,000 gallons a day, every day, no holidays. That single number sizes everything upstream of the trough, and every undersized water system we get called to fix skipped it.
The well must produce it: 2,000 gallons a day is under 1.5 gallons per minute of continuous pumping, which is why even modest wells can water serious herds when storage smooths the delivery. The storage should hold two to three days of demand. The trough must serve the herd’s drinking pattern, which is a crowd at dawn and dusk, not a steady trickle.
Why storage is the cheapest insurance on the ranch
Storage converts a slow well into a strong water system, and it converts an equipment failure into an inconvenience instead of a crisis. Three days of storage means a pump problem discovered Friday evening is a Monday repair, not a Saturday emergency haul with a borrowed water trailer.
It also lets every component upstream be smaller and cheaper: a lower-gpm pump, fewer panels on a solar system, a windmill that can take a calm day off. We size storage from your head count in writing on every stock water quote.
Placement: water is grazing management
Cattle graze effectively within roughly a mile of water on this terrain, and they hammer the grass nearest the trough. Adding a second watering point does more for pasture utilization than most fencing projects, because it moves the herd’s center of gravity onto grass they were ignoring.
Water placement also manages the cattle themselves: away from bog-prone low ground, distributed so young calves are never far from a drink, and sited on firm pads that stay clean in wet spells.
Distance carries a production cost, too. Cattle walking two miles to water burn feed as travel and drink in fewer, larger events, which stresses the trough at peak. Closer water means more grazing time, calmer trough behavior, and better gains on the same grass.

Quick Answers
Can one well water two pastures?
Often, with buried supply lines feeding troughs in each and storage at the high point. Pipe is cheaper than a second well when the terrain cooperates.
How big a trough do I need?
Enough rim space for the herd’s dawn crowd and enough volume that the float refill keeps pace. We size rim and volume from head count, not by eye.
What about winter demand?
Roughly half of summer, but delivery gets harder: freeze protection matters more than volume. Deep tanks, buried lines, and working floats are the winter design.
My well only makes 3 gallons a minute. Is it useless?
Far from it. Three gpm into storage is over 4,000 gallons a day, enough for a large herd. Weak wells with good storage run much of this country.
How much rim space does a herd need at the trough?
Plan for a meaningful fraction of the herd drinking at once at dawn. Crowded troughs bully calves off water in the heat. More rim or a second trough solves it cheaply.
Do stocker cattle on wheat pasture change the math?
Yes: winter grazing puts peak demand in freeze season. Volume is easy then, delivery is hard, so those systems get designed around freeze protection first.
Does water quality change how much cattle drink?
It does. High-salinity or stale water suppresses intake, and suppressed water intake suppresses feed intake and gains. Clean troughs and fresh supply are a production input, not housekeeping.
